This study investigates the translation of Uzbek folktales into English, focusing on the linguistic and cultural challenges posed by deeply rooted idioms, metaphors, and symbolic references – termed lingvokulturemalar. Employing a mixed-method approach, the research analyzes 15 paired folktales using Baker’s Equivalency Matrix and focus group feedback. The findings reveal that literal translations often distort meaning, while adaptive strategies such as contextual expansion, idiom substitution, and syntactic restructuring significantly enhance cultural resonance and reader comprehension. The study also highlights the influence of genre on translation outcomes, noting higher adaptability in epic narratives compared to fables. The paper concludes by advocating for the integration of AI tools and cultural anthropology training in translation practice to preserve the authenticity and emotional depth of intangible heritage.
